As-salāmu ʿalaykum, Beloved Ummah of Muhammad Rasool Allah sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam!
There is an ongoing genocide and humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The Sudanese people continue to endure unimaginable suffering, with their plight exacerbated by a brutal civil war, mass killings, famine, and disease outbreaks. It is a moral imperative for Muslims and people of conscience worldwide to learn more about what is happening in Sudan, raise their voices in defense of innocent civilians, and work towards a lasting solution to this devastating conflict.
Sudan, a nation in Northeast Africa, has been engulfed in a brutal civil war since April 2023. The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has escalated dramatically. The RSF, originally formed from the Janjaweed militias and backed by the UAE, has committed horrific atrocities including massacres, mass graves, and genocidal violence against civilians.
The world is currently witnessing one of the worst humanitarian crises and genocides of our time. Official estimates indicate at least 15,500 deaths, though other estimates are as high as 150,000. The conflict has displaced over 12 million people, with more than 25 million Sudanese civilians in need of humanitarian aid—more than half of Sudan's population. The country is in the grips of mass famine, with millions facing acute food insecurity. The situation has been compounded by severe disease outbreaks including cholera, measles, and malaria, with almost three-quarters of health facilities out of service.
Muslims around the world must take it upon themselves to learn more about the situation in Sudan. Knowledge is a powerful tool, and understanding the history, politics, and human rights issues involved is crucial. The Quran in Surah Al-Imran, Verse 3 reminds us: "You are the best community ever raised for humanity—you encourage good, forbid evil, and believe in Allah." Through this, we understand that Muslims must embrace justice and forbid that which causes injustice.
The narrative portrayed by mainstream media has often overlooked the harrowing reality faced by innocent civilians in Sudan. The RSF has shown no reluctance to hide their atrocities, publishing numerous war crimes on social media. RSF commanders have been recorded instructing troops with genocidal rhetoric: 'I don't want any prisoners—kill them all.' Relief operations are on the brink of collapse due to insecurity, dwindling supplies, and funding shortages. Here's how you can help bring light to the obscured plight of the Sudanese people:
